What does unc mean?
Unc, short for “uncle,” is Gen Z and Gen Alpha slang for an older person who’s uncool or just doesn’t get it. While typically a light pejorative, it’s even more cutting when paired with chopped as chopped and unc, translating to “unattractive and old.” If someone is described as reaching unc status, that means they’re officially deemed “old.” But, depending on the tone, it can be more affectionate than derogatory. It can also be a sign of respect to indicate a person is mature and wise.
Where does unc come from?
In fact, unc comes from African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and began in Black communities as a sign of respect or lighthearted affection for older male family members or mentors. In the early 2020s, the term took on a broader meaning as unc and unc status spread online among younger generations, who used the terms in jokes and insults to describe someone as corny or out of touch.

Who uses unc?
Members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha use unc to roast their teachers, parents, actual uncles, or whomever they deem old — perhaps a big brother, or even a stranger who’s commenting online. Millennials and Gen Xers will sometimes refer to themselves as unc or reaching unc status to lightly self-deprecate about literally getting older, or no longer knowing or caring about what young people consider cool.
