A twentieth-century British author. Two of his best-regarded works are Sons and Lovers and Women in Love. Lawrence is known for his frank treatment of sex and for the radical ideas on society and the family that he voiced in his books.

Lawrence's novel Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned as obscene in both Britain and the United States. In the United States, the ban was appealed to the Supreme Court, which overruled it.
