Bulge, Battle of the

  1. The last major offensive by the German army in World War II . In late 1944, the invasion of Belgium by the Allies was temporarily stopped by a German counterattack in which the Germans broke through the Allied defenses, seizing territory that caused a large “bulge” in their lines. The Allies, led by General George Patton , drove the German forces back with heavy casualties on both sides.
