  1. Also, fit up. Equip or supply what is needed, as in They promised to fit out the expedition free of charge. This expression, dating from the late 1600s, originally was confined to furnishing a ship or other vessel with supplies, repairs, and the like. By the 1720s it was being used more broadly, as it still is.
