First recorded in 1835–45; from Mexican Spanish huasteco from Nahuatl huāxtēcatl “person from Huāxtlān, ” equivalent to huāx(in), a tropical tree that produces edible pods + -tlān locative suffix + -tēcatl suffix of ethnic names
