First recorded in 1975–80; from Latin American Spanish (Mexico), equivalent to Spanish sin “without” (from Latin sine ) + semilla “seed,” apparently continuation of Old Spanish dialect semilia, by dissimilation from Late Latin sēminia, neuter plural (taken as feminine singular) of sēminium, derivative of Latin sēmen “seed, semen”; see semen
