From the headlines: Thousands of volunteers in Japan’s Aomori Prefecture took part in a herculean effort to move the 400-ton Hirosaki Castle using hikiya, a traditional method involving ropes and rollers. Over five days, groups of 80 people at a time took turns hauling the castle, ultimately shifting it about 12 feet closer to its original foundation. The same human-powered technique was used in 2015, when the castle was moved after being damaged in an earthquake.

From the headlines: A school principal saved 900 lives when he quickly mobilized students and staff to move to higher ground during catastrophic flooding in Nepal. After Rajendra Dawadi learned the floodwaters were headed toward the Tribhuvan Trishuli School, he rapidly put an evacuation plan in place. Dawadi told students to run uphill, organized buses to leave the area, and seated a few children on their teachers’ motorcycles. Less than 15 minutes later, a deluge swept the school building away.

From the headlines: Researchers found that specific brain waves protect against the effects of a chemical associated with narcolepsy, which causes abrupt and overwhelming sleepiness. The neurotransmitter orexin was linked with both narcolepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. The study suggested that people who spend time in deep sleep producing stronger sleep spindles and sleep oscillations, which are brain waves associated with memory support, may experience less cognitive decline because these brain waves counter the effects of high levels of orexin.
peregrination

From the headlines: A 91-year old man became the oldest hiker to complete the Appalachian Trail. Dale Sanders began his peregrination in September 2025, ultimately taking nearly a year to hike every section of the 2,193-mile trail. As Sanders traversed the challenging route, he fell dozens of times, once ending up briefly in the hospital, before completing the adventure atop Maine’s Mount Katahdin on August 31.

From the headlines: A new study found that the prevalence of brain disease in former football players is much higher than previously thought. Researchers said at least one in four NFL players can expect to end up with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. The degenerative condition is caused by repeated head impacts and can cause mood swings, erratic behavior, memory loss, and other neurological symptoms. Other studies have shown that for those without head injuries, the rate of CTE is near zero.
