Warren, Earl

  1. A political leader and judge of the twentieth century. Warren was governor of California before being named chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1953, and he served on the Court until 1969. His time as chief justice was marked by boldness in interpreting the Constitution ; the “Warren Court” often brought the Constitution to the support of the disadvantaged. ( See Brown versus Board of Educationand Miranda decision). Warren also led a government commission investigating the assassination of President John F. Kennedy ( see Lee Harvey Oswald ).
