What does FYP mean?

FYP stands for the “For You” page on the massively popular short video app, TikTok. FYP acts like an individual landing page for users which showcases curated videos that TikTok thinks they might watch or like.

TikTok users often hashtag their videos with #fyp in hopes their content will make it onto other users’ FYP, thereby getting more views.

Example: My fyp was loaded with cat videos today.

Where does FYP come from?

When opening the mobile version of TikTok, a user sees an option to navigate to a page that displays videos from their followers. The user also sees an option to go to a page with videos “For You”—that is, other videos that TikTok’s algorithm thinks you, the individual user, will be interested in or enjoy.

People have been referring to this “For You” option as the For You page, and abbreviating that as FYP, since at least 2018. FYP became far more widespread when TikTok exploded in popularity around summer 2019.

Because of their prominent positioning, videos that appear on users’ FYP (especially videos that TikTok selects for all users’ For You pages) can get many more views. So, many TikTok users hashtag their videos with #fyp (along with #foryou and #foryoupage) in hopes they will get surfaced on other users’ FYPs. Viewers of videos may also comment on content with #fyp and the related hashtags to boost the content.

TikTok hasn’t revealed how their algorithm curates content for users’ FYP. The company has said, however, that videos that are universally posted on every user’s For You page are selected by TikTok employees, so attempts to rig the system by spamming content with various forms of FYP will likely be ineffective.

Who uses FYP?

FYP is most often used as the hashtag #fyp for TikTok videos or other social media posts linking to or about TikTik videos.

The abbreviation is associated with younger, more tech-savvy internet users and social media influencers.
