OK wallet

[ oh-key wol-it ]

What does OK wallet mean?

Used especially by young women on the short video app TikTok, OK wallet is meant to call out and clap back at sexist and misogynistic comments made by young men online.

OK wallet riffs on the viral slang phrase OK boomer, used to dismiss out-of-touch, closed-minded remarks made by older adults, usually white men. In the phrase OK wallet, wallet is meant to give you men who demean young women a taste of their own medicine.

Specifically, wallet ironically objectifies men as nothing more than a source of money for women, and is intended to fire back at various traditional, sexist stereotypes of women as housekeepers at the service of men.

Where does OK wallet come from?

According to NBC News, OK wallet first appeared in the comments of a playful TikTok video posted on April 21, 2020 by user Haley Sharpe.

Some commenters called Sharpe a “dishwasher,” activating long-running, misogynistic tropes that “a woman’s place is in the kitchen.” Some of Sharpe’s defenders, both men and women, countered by calling the posters wallets, playing on stereotypes that men are only good for is making money and expected to always pay for women.

Elsewhere on TikTok, women have rampantly been called other such misogynistic terms as “sandwich maker” or reduced to sexual objects. Drawing on the dismissive and sarcastic phrase OK boomer that went viral on TikTok in 2019, OK wallet spread as a way to rebut misogyny—to see how young men like how it feels when they are dehumanized  and, more broadly, to expose and transform the way women are treated online.
