What is BIPOC Mental Health Month?

BIPOC Mental Health Month is a month-long observance dedicated to raising awareness about and building support around the mental health issues specifically faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (abbreviated as BIPOC) in the US.

The month is based on the recognition that Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color face unique circumstances and challenges in relation to their mental health in the context of systemic racism, including unique forms of trauma and stress.

The month is often observed with educational events and opportunities to receive support and access to mental health resources to help people maintain and improve their mental health, as well as working to remove the stigmas around mental health conditions.

Where does BIPOC Mental Health Month come from?

The event that became known as BIPOC Mental Health Month was first officially observed in 2008 as Minority Mental Health Month. It is sometimes referred to as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in honor of Bebe Moore Campbell, a Black American author and mental health advocate.

The related observance known as Mental Health Awareness Month is observed in May and has been observed in some form since at least 1949. BIPOC Mental Health Month was developed to specifically address and raise awareness around the barriers to mental health care faced by members of the BIPOC community.
